What are the requirements to become an art therapist?

Interested in becoming an Art Therapist? Or just want to know what training my therapist may have that makes them qualified to treat me? Art therapists not only go through extensive training in this specialty, but often have background in traditional therapy processes. Art therapy, while not only a qualification, is a modality. While requirements may change for actual employment, here are the basics!

In order to practice art therapy at entry level, individuals must have a master's degree in art therapy. This minimum educational professional requirement is set by the American Art Therapy Association, Inc. (AATA). There are then additional levels of qualifications that you can achieve:

  • ATR-P: An ATR-P (Provisional) meet the established educational standards, completion of graduate degree in art therapy. ATR-P is required to practice art therapy under an approved supervisor.

  • ATR: An ATR (Registered) meets standards with completion of graduate-level education in art therapy. In addition, ATR must complete 100 hours of supervised post-graduate experience

  • ATR-BC: An ATR-BC (Board Certified) is the highest level of competency in art therapy. Board Certified displays comprehension in psychological theories, clinical skills, and use of art materials in art therapy.

These are the current requirements as of 2026. For more information, visit atcb.org and arttherapy.org.
